〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Laguna Loire
CHARACTER AGE: Mid-40s
SERIES: Final Fantasy VIII
CHRONOLOGY: Just before the end of the game, after Squall and friends have traveled into the future via time compression
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Randomize me! Not with Squall Leonhart or Seifer Almasy, please
BACKGROUND: It's a wiki
PERSONALITY: Designed as something of a counterpart to the game's lead character Squall Leonhart, Laguna is friendly, talkative and not too worried about looking silly (which is good, because he's a dork) where Squall can come off as cold, taciturn and quite concerned about looking/feeling stupid (at least to start.) He joined the Galbadian army as a young man but doesn't seem like the typical soldier, possibly because he enlisted in order to travel—he's got a lot of curiosity about the world and the people in it.

Actually, Laguna is definitely a people person in general. Friendly and something of a chatterbox to old friend or new acquaintance alike, he has an easygoing nature and doesn't hold grudges, even though it might be smarter to do so—at one point, after the game's resident mad scientist is freed from service to an evil sorceress (not that he was protesting much), Laguna lets the guy stick around provided that he turn over a new leaf and do helpful mad science. He cultivates positive relationships quickly—after just one night of talking, a beautiful musician comes to regard him as a lost love when he's believed dead in the war. That's partly rose-colored glasses and wishful thinking, yes, but it was also a genuine, if fleeting, connection. The friendships he does maintain tend to be deep and long-lasting; his two best friends are stalwart allies over two decades.

At the same time, he's not all smiles and friendliness. Laguna might have had his own reasons for becoming a soldier, but he did become one, with a freakin' machine gun becoming his main weapon. It helps that the game positions the soldiers he fights against as very definitely the bad guys, but he's still capable of making tough decisions and even killing people. Later on, he shows grit and tenacity in his journey after a kidnapped child, despite having very few resources. Laguna's got a fluffy center, sure, but there's a solid spine in there too.

Over the periods of his life depicted in the game, Laguna does grow and change, gaining maturity as he learns what he really wants out of life. A big catalyst is the time he spends in Winhill, first as an invalid and then the self-styled protector of the town and uncle/eventual adopted father to a girl who's been orphaned by the war. Once filled with wanderlust, his enjoyment of travel starts to war with his love for this little town and the people in it—well, some of them anyway, since a lot of them don't like him. The ones who do just matter more. And once something of a romantic, he learns what real love is based on months of coming to know and care about a not-so-glamorous woman named Raine. Finally, rather than fight as a soldier in order to travel, he fights for Ellone, the little girl he has come to love as a father, after she is kidnapped—first to rescue her, and then to free a country that is being oppressed by the sorceress who kidnapped Ellone. When the dust settles, he accepts real, significant responsibility as that country's new president, helping it to recover.
Sadly, his life is also touched by tragedy. After sending Ellone home to Raine (who he married before embarking on the rescue misson) in Winhill, hoping to join them both later, Raine died after giving birth to her and Laguna's child, and Ellone was sent away to an orphanage with the baby. He learned of Raine's death but never knew she was even pregnant or where Ellone had gone. With nothing left for him in Winhill, he continued as president, but never forgets the people he loved or the way they had affected him.

POWER:
1. Fast travel: Laguna will be able to teleport to any location he has personally been to (but not government facilities or plot-blocked locations, of course!) or seen a photograph of, if he knows where the photo is/has sufficient information to human GPS it. (So if he knows where Las Vegas is, he could teleport to Caesar's Palace if he knows it's on the strip there and sees a picture of it.)
2. Leg Detector: Laguna will be able to detect deliberate lies or deception by the degree to which his left leg cramps up. A minor act of misleading will make it twitch; an outright falsehood stated to his face will be a really awful Charlie horse. This only applies to people he's talking to or paying some level of attention to. If he's really engrossed in a book and the person five feet away in a park is spouting lies, he won't feel anything.
3. Leaving this blank for now.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
Hey everyone!

[The floppy-haired guy on the network gives the camera a friendly wave and a smile.]

So I'm the latest guy to get yanked into another world. Honestly, it's kind of cool! I mean, there's stuff I need to do back home, and I wish my friends are here, but this doesn't happen every day. I might as well try and enjoy it until I can go home, right?

So, on that note. [He whips out a small notebook and pen.] I want to know the coolest places to visit here. Anywhere, as long as it's interesting. I don't need to worry about travel costs since I've got this nifty teleporting ability, so tell me your favorite place! I'll add it to the list.
